Roos Blokhuis took the lead early on in the race, followed closely by Diane van Es and Jasmijn Lau. During the second lap she had to give up the leading position though. Despite some of the leading runners falling in the mud, Lau and Blokhuis kept marching on strong. Seemingly relaxed Lau extend her leading in the final lap, but wasn’t able to hold on to it. She finally had to settle for the 4th position, just missing out on the medals. The winner was the Italian Nadia Battocletti. After the finish, Lau thanked the crowds for their support: “this was awesome!”.
In the country classification the Dutch team did take a medal though. The six girls managed to race to the second place.
Straight after the race of the girls, the boys continued the race. Despite the massive support of the crowds, the Dutch athletes Luuk Maas, Bram Anderiessen, Robin van Riel, Tim Verbaandert, Illian Mantens and Ryan Oosting couldn’t come close to the medals. Ingebritsen from Norway ran a very strong race. As a 17-year old the young athlete won the 1500 and 5000m earlier this year at the EC in Berlin. In Tilburg he secured this third European cross country title. The best Dutch runner was Bram Anderiessen.
